(Exodus 33:18-19 NIV) Then Moses said, "Now show me your glory." {19} And the
LORD said, "I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will
proclaim my name, the LORD, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will
have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have
compassion.
(Exodus 34:5-7 NIV) Then the LORD came down in the cloud and
stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. {6} And he passed in
front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious
God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, {7} maintaining love to
thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave
the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin
of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."
(Psalms
34:18-19 NIV) The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are
crushed in spirit. {19} A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD
delivers him from them all;
(Psalms 51:17 NIV) The sacrifices of God are
a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not
despise.
(Psalms 86:15-16 NIV) But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and
gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness. {16} Turn to me
and have mercy on me; grant your strength to your servant and save the son of
your maidservant.
(Psalms 100:5 NIV) For the LORD is good and his love
endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all
generations.
(Psalms 103:2-6 NIV) Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget
not all his benefits-- {3} who forgives all your sins and heals all your
diseases, {4} who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and
compassion, {5} who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth
is renewed like the eagle's. {6} The LORD works righteousness and justice for
all the oppressed.
(Psalms 103:8 NIV) The LORD is compassionate and
gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
(Psalms 103:11-14 NIV) For as
high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear
him; {12} as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our
transgressions from us. {13} As a father has compassion on his children, so the
LORD has compassion on those who fear him; {14} for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.
(Psalms
116:3-6 NIV) The cords of death entangled me, the anguish of the grave came upon
me; I was overcome by trouble and sorrow. {4} Then I called on the name of the
LORD: "O LORD, save me!" {5} The LORD is gracious and righteous; our God is full
of compassion. {6} The LORD protects the simplehearted; when I was in great
need, he saved me.
(Psalms 145:8-9 NIV) The LORD is gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. {9} The LORD is good to all; he
has compassion on all he has made.
(Psalms 147:3 NIV) He heals the
brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
(Isaiah 30:18 NIV) Yet the LORD
longs to be gracious to you; he rises to show you compassion. For the LORD is a
God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!
(Isaiah 49:13 NIV)
Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For
the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted
ones.
(Isaiah 49:15-16 NIV) "Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will
not forget you! {16} See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your
walls are ever before me.
(Micah 7:18-19 NIV) Who is a God like you, who pardons sin
and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not
stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. {19} You will again have
compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities
into the depths of the sea.
(Matthew 5:3-12 NIV) "Blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. {4} Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted. {5} Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
earth. {6} Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they
will be filled. {7} Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. {8}
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. {9} Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. {10} Blessed are those who are
persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. {11}
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds
of evil against you because of me. {12} Rejoice and be glad, because great is
your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were
before you.
(Matthew 9:12-13 NIV) On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not
the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. {13} But go and learn what this
means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the
righteous, but sinners."
(Matthew 9:35-36 NIV) Jesus went through all the
towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the
kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. {36} When he saw the crowds, he
had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep
without a shepherd.
(Matthew 11:28-30 NIV) "Come to me, all you who are
weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. {29} Take my yoke upon you and
learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. {30} For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
(Matthew
14:14 NIV) When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them
and healed their sick.
(Matthew 15:32 NIV) Jesus called his disciples to
him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with
me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry,
or they may collapse on the way."
(Matthew 18:3-5 NIV) And he said: "I
tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will
never enter the kingdom of heaven. {4} Therefore, whoever humbles himself like
this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. {5} "And whoever welcomes a
little child like this in my name welcomes me.
(Matthew 20:32-34 NIV)
Jesus stopped and called them. "What do you want me to do for you?" he asked.
{33} "Lord," they answered, "we want our sight." {34} Jesus had compassion on
them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed
him.
(Matthew 23:11-12 NIV) The greatest among you will be your servant.
{12} For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself
will be exalted.
(Mark 1:40-42 NIV) A man with leprosy came to him and
begged him on his knees, "If you are willing, you can make me clean." {41}
Filled with compassion, Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. "I am
willing," he said. "Be clean!" {42} Immediately the leprosy left him and he was
cured.
(Mark 5:19 NIV) Jesus did not let him, but said, "Go home to your
family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had
mercy on you."
(Mark 6:34 NIV) When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,
he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So
he began teaching them many things.
(Luke 4:18-19 NIV) "The Spirit of the
Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He
has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the
blind, to release the oppressed, {19} to proclaim the year of the Lord's
favor."
(Luke 6:35-36 NIV) But love your enemies, do good to them, and
lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be
great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the
ungrateful and wicked. {36} Be merciful, just as your Father is
merciful.
(Luke 15:18-20 NIV) I will set out and go back to my father and
say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. {19} I am no
longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired men.' {20}
So he got up and went to his father. "But while he was still a long way off, his
father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw
his arms around him and kissed him.
(Luke 18:9-14 NIV) To some who were
confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus
told this parable: {10} "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee
and the other a tax collector. {11} The Pharisee stood up and prayed about
himself: 'God, I thank you that I am not like other men--robbers, evildoers,
adulterers--or even like this tax collector. {12} I fast twice a week and give a
tenth of all I get.' {13} "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would
not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on
me, a sinner.' {14} "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home
justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he
who humbles himself will be exalted."
(Luke 19:10 NIV) For the Son of Man
came to seek and to save what was lost."
(Acts 3:19-21 NIV) Repent, then,
and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing
may come from the Lord, {20} and that he may send the Christ, who has been
appointed for you--even Jesus. {21} He must remain in heaven until the time
comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy
prophets.
(Romans 9:15-16 NIV) For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy
on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion."
{16} It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's
mercy.
(Romans 11:32 NIV) For God has bound all men over to disobedience
so that he may have mercy on them all.
(2 Corinthians 1:3-5 NIV) Praise
be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and
the God of all comfort, {4} who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can
comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from
God. {5} For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also
through Christ our comfort overflows.
(2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV) For you
know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your
sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become
rich.
(2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV) To keep me from becoming conceited
because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in
my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. {8} Three times I pleaded with
the Lord to take it away from me. {9} But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient
for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all
the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. {10}
That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in
hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am
strong.
(Philippians 2:4-8 NIV) Each of you should look not only to your
own interests, but also to the interests of others. {5} Your attitude should be
the same as that of Christ Jesus: {6} Who, being in very nature God, did not
consider equality with God something to be grasped, {7} but made himself
nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. {8}
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient
to death-- even death on a cross!
(Colossians 3:12-15 NIV) Therefore, as
God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion,
kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. {13} Bear with each other and
forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the
Lord forgave you. {14} And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them
all together in perfect unity. {15} Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be
thankful.
(James 2:5 NIV) Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen
those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit
the kingdom he promised those who love him?
(James 4:6-10 NIV) But he
gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but
gives grace to the humble." {7} Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. {8} Come near to God and he will come near to
you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
{9} Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to
gloom. {10} Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you
up.
(James 5:10-11 NIV) Brothers, as an example of patience in the face
of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. {11} As you
know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's
perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full
of compassion and mercy.
(1 Peter 5:5-7 NIV) Young men, in the same way
be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with
humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to
the humble." {6} Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he
may lift you up in due time. {7} Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares
for you.

(Isaiah 55:6-9 NIV) Seek the LORD while he may
be found; call on him while he is near. {7} Let the wicked forsake his way and
the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on
him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. {8} "For my thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. {9} "As the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 57:15 NIV) For this is what the high
and lofty One says-- he who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high
and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive
the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.
(Isaiah
66:2 NIV) Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?"
declares the LORD. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in
spirit, and trembles at my word.
(Jeremiah 31:25 NIV) I will refresh the
weary and satisfy the faint."
(Lamentations 3:21-32 NIV) Yet this I call
to mind and therefore I have hope: {22} Because of the Lord's great love we are
not consumed, for his compassions never fail. {23} They are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness. {24} I say to myself, "The LORD is my portion;
therefore I will wait for him." {25} The LORD is good to those whose hope is in
him, to the one who seeks him; {26} it is good to wait quietly for the salvation
of the LORD. {27} It is good for a man to bear the yoke while he is young. {28}
Let him sit alone in silence, for the LORD has laid it on him. {29} Let him bury
his face in the dust-- there may yet be hope. {30} Let him offer his cheek to
one who would strike him, and let him be filled with disgrace. {31} For men are
not cast off by the Lord forever. {32} Though he brings grief, he will show
compassion, so great is his unfailing love.
(Hosea 2:23 NIV) I will plant
her for myself in the land; I will show my love to the one I called 'Not my
loved one. ' I will say to those called 'Not my people, ' 'You are my people';
and they will say, 'You are my God.'"
(Jonah 3:8-10 NIV) But let man and
beast be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them
give up their evil ways and their violence. {9} Who knows? God may yet relent
and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish." {10}
When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had
compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction he had
threatened.
